The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 will be the 13th edition of the quadrennial tournament and it is being held entirely in India this time around. A host of top cricket stars from around the world are taking part in the ODI showpiece which will see a total of 48 matches to be played across 46 days. The four teams that will top the world cup 2023 points table will enter the semi-finals. India qualified for the 2023 world cup as host while seven teams made the cut through Super League.
Two teams - Sri Lanka and Netherlands - completed the line up through the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023. Australia are the most successful team in the cricket world cup history having won the title five times while India and West Indies (did not qualify) have won it twice each. England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have won once each.

Memorable Encounters in ICC World Cup

1. Australia vs South Africa, 1999
One of the greatest ever matches in cricket history. After keeping Australia to 213-all out, South Africa put themselves in a good spot and needed 1 run to win from three deliveries with a wicket remaining. A mix-up between Lance Kulsener and Allan Donald meant the former was run out and the contest ended in a tie.
2. England vs New Zealand, 2019
Again, a tie. And that too in a world cup final. Thankfully, there was Super Over. It also ended in a tie. Boundary count decided the winner.
3. England vs Ireland, 2011
Ireland, the minnows were set 328 to win by England in a world cup clash. Enter Kevin O Brian. He belted the fastest century in world cup history to guide Ireland to a three-wicket win.
4. India vs Zimbabwe 1983
India were reduced to 17/5 and then 77/6. Enter Kapil Dev and he perhaps the greatest ever knock in world cup history. The legendary allrounder belted 16 fours and six sixes to make an unbeaten 175 helping his team to a match winning total.
5. India vs West Indies, 1983
India ended West Indies dominance with a win for the ages. In the final of the world cup, India were bowled out for 183. Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal shared three wickets apiece as West Indies crumbled to 140-all out and India became the world champion.

History of ICC World Cup Winners

1. 1975 World Cup
West Indies won the inaugural ODI World Cup under the captaincy of the great Clive Lloyd.
2. 1979 World Cup
West Indies defended their title with Clive Lloyd again captaining them to world domination.
3. 1983 World Cup
Beating all the odds, under the captaincy of Kapil Dev, India defeated West Indies to lift the trophy.
4. 1987 World Cup
Australia, under the captaincy of Allan Border, became the third ever team to win the title.
5. 1992 World Cup>
Imran Khan came back from retirement to star and guide Pakistan to their maiden world title.
6. 1996 World Cup
Arjuna Ranatunga was the captain as Sri Lanka became the latest team to win the ODI world cup.
7. 1999 World Cup
Australia equaled record of West Indies for winning titles. Steve Waugh was their captain.
8. 2003 World Cup
An unbeaten Australia stormed a third title with Ricky Ponting at the helm.
9. 2007 World Cup
Australia completed a hat-trick of world cup titles with Ricky Ponting winning his second trophy as captain.
10. 2011 World Cup
MS Dhoni finished it in style as the India captain brought home the trophy after 28-year-await.
11. 2015 World Cup
Michael Clarke was the captain as Australia won a record-extending fifth ODI world title.
12. 2019 World Cup
In a nerve-shredding final, England beat New Zealand to end their wait for a first ever ODI world title.
